Connecting Innovation: What we learned at AusMedTech and Electronex 2026

Industry conferences offer more than an opportunity to showcase products or expand professional networks. They provide valuable insight into the challenges organisations are facing, the technologies attracting the most attention and the direction entire industries are heading.


This year, the Genesys team attended both AusMedTech 2026 in Perth and Electronex 2026 in Sydney. Although the two events serve different audiences, they shared a common purpose: bringing together the people and organisations shaping the future of Australian technology.


AusMedTech focused on medical innovation, commercialisation and the future of healthcare, while Electronex highlighted advances in electronics design, manufacturing and embedded technologies. Together, the events provided a broader perspective on how product development is evolving across multiple industries.


While every conversation was different, several consistent themes emerged. Artificial intelligence continues to influence product development, healthcare delivery is changing rapidly, commercialisation remains one of the industry’s greatest challenges, and collaboration across the supply chain has never been more important.





Artificial Intelligence is driving new possibilities. But purpose still comes first


Artificial intelligence was undoubtedly one of the most discussed topics across both events.


Whether speaking with electronics manufacturers, semiconductor suppliers or medical technology companies, AI was frequently presented as an enabler for smarter products, improved workflows and better decision-making.


However, one message was repeated throughout the discussions: simply adding AI to a product does not create value.


Successful products solve clearly defined problems. Artificial intelligence should enhance the user experience, improve operational efficiency or support better clinical or engineering outcomes, not exist as a feature for its own sake.


For companies developing connected products, this reinforces the importance of understanding customer needs before selecting technologies. AI may be transforming industries, but good engineering still begins with identifying the problem that needs to be solved.



Healthcare is moving beyond the Hospital


One of the most interesting discussions during AusMedTech explored how healthcare delivery is changing.


For decades, hospitals have been the centre of patient care. Today, healthcare systems around the world are facing new pressures, including ageing populations, workforce shortages and increasing demand for more accessible services. These challenges are driving healthcare beyond traditional clinical environments and into homes, aged care facilities and community settings.


Technologies such as remote patient monitoring, telehealth platforms and connected medical devices are becoming increasingly important as healthcare providers look for ways to deliver high-quality care closer to patients.


This shift creates significant opportunities for product developers. Medical devices must now be designed not only for clinical performance but also for portability, ease of use, connectivity and long-term reliability in environments outside the hospital.


For engineering teams, this represents an important change in design thinking. The focus is no longer limited to creating accurate medical devices; it also involves designing products that integrate seamlessly into people’s daily lives while supporting clinicians with reliable data and intuitive user experiences.

Commercialisation requires more than Regulatory Approval


One of the strongest messages from the MedTech panel discussion was that regulatory approval should not be viewed as the finish line.


Obtaining approval through organisations such as the TGA or FDA is a major milestone, but successful commercialisation depends on much more than demonstrating technical performance or regulatory compliance.


Investors and industry leaders emphasised the importance of building products that address genuine market needs while also creating measurable value for healthcare providers and patients.


This includes demonstrating how a product improves clinical outcomes, reduces costs, simplifies workflows or enables more efficient models of care.


Several speakers also highlighted that early-stage companies often attempt to address multiple markets simultaneously. While this may seem attractive from a technical perspective, investors generally favour companies with a clearly defined initial application and a focused commercial strategy.


Establishing success within one market before expanding into additional applications often provides a stronger path towards sustainable growth.



Australia’s Innovation Ecosystem continues to mature


Electronex demonstrated the breadth of Australia’s electronics industry and the growing strength of its product development ecosystem.


The exhibition brought together PCB manufacturers, component suppliers, contract manufacturers, semiconductor companies, test and measurement specialists, embedded technology providers and engineering consultancies from across Australia and overseas.


Major international companies were represented alongside Australian businesses, illustrating the depth of expertise available throughout the local electronics industry.


One particularly interesting observation from the Genesys team was that many visitors approached the stand with the same question: “What does Genesys do?”


While the question itself was simple, it highlighted a broader opportunity.


Many organisations are still unaware that Australia has experienced engineering companies capable of taking complex electronic products from concept through to manufacturing. As Australia’s technology sector continues to grow, increasing awareness of local engineering capability will be essential for strengthening the country’s innovation ecosystem.


The exhibition also reinforced the value of connecting with suppliers and manufacturing partners. Conversations throughout the event introduced new technologies, strengthened existing relationships and created opportunities for future collaboration across the electronics supply chain.

Collaboration continues to be the Foundation of Successful Product Development


Although AusMedTech and Electronex focused on different industries, both events highlighted the same underlying principle: innovation is rarely achieved by one organisation alone.


Developing successful products requires collaboration between design engineers, manufacturers, clinicians, researchers, suppliers, regulatory specialists and investors.


Throughout Electronex, the Genesys team had the opportunity to meet component suppliers, manufacturing partners, fellow engineering organisations and emerging talent entering the industry. Discussions also included organisations developing new manufacturing capabilities and companies exploring opportunities to collaborate on future projects.


Similarly, the AusMedTech panel placed significant emphasis on strategic partnerships throughout the commercialisation process. Access to clinical expertise, manufacturing capability, investment and distribution networks was consistently identified as being just as important as the underlying technology itself.


As products become increasingly sophisticated, collaboration across the entire development lifecycle will continue to play a critical role in bringing innovative ideas to market.


Looking Ahead


Attending AusMedTech and Electronex provided an opportunity not only to showcase Genesys’ capabilities but also to listen to the conversations shaping the future of product development.


Across healthcare and electronics, the direction is becoming increasingly clear. Artificial intelligence is changing the way products are developed and used. Healthcare is expanding beyond traditional hospital settings. Commercial success depends on solving clearly defined problems rather than simply introducing new technology. And collaboration across the innovation ecosystem is becoming more valuable than ever.


For companies developing the next generation of connected products, these trends reinforce the importance of combining strong engineering with practical product development strategies that consider manufacturability, usability, regulatory requirements and long-term commercial success.


As Australia’s technology ecosystem continues to evolve, events such as AusMedTech and Electronex remain valuable opportunities to exchange ideas, build partnerships and better understand the challenges that will shape tomorrow’s products.


The conversations may only last a few days, but the insights gained continue to influence how the industry thinks about innovation long after the exhibition halls have closed.
