CT Injection System
Precision contrast delivery for CT imaging
Genesys Electronics Design has worked with Bayer (formerly Imaxeon) for nearly two decades to support the development and evolution of CT contrast injection systems used in hospitals around the world

The Technology

CT contrast injection systems are designed to deliver contrast media with high precision during imaging procedures, improving the visibility of blood vessels, organs and abnormalities.
The Bayer family of CT Injection Systems, originally developed by Imaxeon, includes devices such as the MEDRAD Salient system. These platforms enable clinicians to configure customised injection protocols with multiple phases, allowing precise control over injection parameters.
The system supports incremental injection volumes as small as 1 mL, with flow rates ranging from 0.1 mL/sec to 10 mL/sec, ensuring accurate delivery of contrast media during CT scans. A remote control unit allows operation from the CT control room, while integrated battery packs enable mobility within the imaging suite.
The device also stores historical injection data, allowing clinicians to review previous injections and protocols to support consistent imaging workflows.
The Challenge
Administering contrast media during CT imaging requires extremely precise control of injection parameters such as flow rate, volume and pressure while ensuring patient safety throughout the procedure. The systems must operate reliably in demanding clinical environments and integrate seamlessly with medical imaging equipment.
As CT injection platforms evolved, newer generations of devices required improved performance, enhanced connectivity, intuitive user interfaces and support for increasingly complex injection protocols.
The Solution
Modern CT injection systems, such as the MEDRAD Salient, were developed to provide highly controlled and configurable delivery of contrast media during imaging procedures.
The systems enable clinicians to create customised injection protocols with multiple phases, allowing precise control over injection parameters. Features such as remote operation from the CT control room, integrated battery systems and advanced control electronics support safe and efficient operation within the imaging environment.
Through robust electronics architecture, embedded software and communication systems between device modules, the platform enables reliable contrast delivery while supporting evolving clinical workflows and regulatory requirements.

Genesys Engineering Contribution
Genesys began collaborating with Imaxeon in 2005 during the commercialisation of the Avidia Angiographic Contrast Injector. The partnership has continued through the development of several generations of CT injection systems, including the Stellinity, Salient and Centargo models.
Over this time, Genesys has contributed to multiple aspects of the product platform, including:
• Printed circuit board design and development (PCBA)
• Embedded software development and module integration
• Graphical user interface implementation for touchscreen systems
• Communication systems between system components
• Multi-language messaging systems and databases
• Interface modules for integration with medical diagnostic scanners
• Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing and regulatory compliance
Genesys also supported the development and improvement of battery management systems as battery technologies evolved and the power requirements of newer models increased.
Another key development included the design of an air detection system capable of identifying both large air volumes at low pressure and small air bubbles during injections at pressures up to 300 psi. This required the creation of specialised testing equipment to generate bubbles of varying sizes and frequencies for validation.

Impact
Mick Brooks, R&D Manager at Imaxeon (now Bayer), commented:

Through its long-standing collaboration with Bayer and Imaxeon, Genesys Electronics Design has supported the development of CT contrast injection systems used in hospitals and medical imaging centres worldwide.
From connected medical devices to diagnostic platforms, Genesys Electronics Design helps MedTech innovators bring their ideas to life.
